It’s been a long time coming! Our new book.

Many people feel powerless in the face of cancer. We wanted to change that. That’s why integrative oncologist Brian Lawenda MD and I teamed up to create a practical guide that empowers people with cancer to play an active role in their healing journey – before, during and after treatment. I’m thrilled to announce that Empowered Against Cancer will be published on April 16th. Here’s the Amazon link: Empowered Against Cancer. The eBook is available for pre-order.

What To Expect When You Have Cancer

When I found out I was pregnant with my first child, my doctor told me to buy the book What To Expect When You’re Expecting – a truly encyclopedic compendium about the process, joys and challenges of pregnancy and childbirth. Being able to look up symptoms I was experiencing, get tips for ways to tackle them and gain a better understanding of what was going on in my body felt reassuring and empowering.

We want Empowered Against Cancer to be the cancer patient’s equivalent: a comprehensive, user-friendly guide to help you understand the process of cancer, its treatments, their possible side-effects, and ways you can address these. We hope that oncologists will recommend it to every newly diagnosed patient, anyone struggling with treatment side-effects and cancer survivors wishing to reduce their risk of recurrence. And if you’re not personally affected by cancer, give a copy of the book to someone who is.

Empowered Against Cancer isn’t a work of flowery prose; it’s packed with information that could feel overwhelming if you tried to read it from cover to cover. That’s why we suggest you use it as a reference book, looking up issues as they arise and dipping into topics that interest you, be they nutrition, sleep, circadian health or hypnotherapy.

For example, if you were recently diagnosed, you may want to read the section on prehabilitation that explains how to get in the best possible shape before you start treatment. If you’re experiencing gastrointestinal symptoms linked to cancer treatment, another section lists interventions that can help. Or if you’re struggling with unwanted weight loss, Chapter 6 provides detailed guidance.

In addition to publishing Zest for Life. The Mediterranean Anti-Cancer Diet in 2010, I have taught countless nutrition workshops at the Boulder Community Health Cancer Center and have helped hundreds of clients adopt a Modern Mediterranean diet.
