Many cancer drugs (chemotherapy, hormone therapy, immunotherapy, biological targeted agents) can cause toxicities that impact the heart, liver, kidneys and other organs, and potentially interact with commonly prescribed medications. It’s unlikely that your oncologist will know all of these risks and interactions, which is why the oncology pharmacist is such an important member of your cancer care team.
It’s a good idea to schedule an appointment to have your oncology pharmacist review all of your medications and supplements, and help identify risks and interactions. They can also help make medication substitution recommendations that you can share with your prescribing providers.
